LAAS Demo Wrap 1-13-08

Introduction to Demo Wrap: What should the humane community do when its taxes go towards the repugnant, criminal, and sick behavior of a system that murders tens of thousands of healthy and treatable cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, rabbits, and wildlife every year? What should the humane community do when its voice goes unheard at Commission and City Council meetings? What should the humane community do when a dirty-dealing, morally corrupt, and dishonest Mayor and staff refuse to take the simple, straightforward steps to stop this killing of innocent animals? . . . . .

It should exercise its constitutional right to seek redress of grievances with those possessing the power and possible influence to make the ethical and moral changes needed to save lives. (If you don't know what goes on inside the six LA City Death Camps, please take a minute after reading this post to watch the UNDERCOVER VIDEO by clicking here to see for yourself what is at stake and to understand the magnitude of the animal suffering inside LAAS as a result of the Mayor's and Jimmy Blackman's refusal to hire individuals who will implement the No Kill Equation.)

A wise man once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and then hoping for a different result. For YEARS, the humane community has written letters, made heartfelt pleas to its representatives and filled out petitions in hopes that the LA city shelter system would be purged of all the mismanagement, corruption, laziness, ineptitude and downright arrogance of those who work in and oversee this killing machine; but the mass killing goes on. Ask yourself this question: What kind of person can hold down a dog or cat while he or she struggles to get free with heart pounding and body shaking with terror? What kind of person can then purposefully take a syringe of Fatal Plus and plunge it into the vein, abdomen or heart of this poor struggling animal and then watch a beautiful being who could have found a home perish? What kind of person could then drag him or her like a sack of garbage to a freezer, ultimately to be rendered into fertilizer and lipstick?

During the anti-Vietnam era, the idea was put out to the public, "What if the Government put on a war and nobody came?" Well, what if you ran a killing machine like LAAS and couldn't find people willing to murder animals for ten dollars an hour? What if the General Manager and staff at LAAS years ago had stood up and refused to participate in the killing of healthy, treatable, adoptable animals like Nathan Winograd did in Ithaca his first day on the job?

If those who worked at LAAS refused to kill innocent animals and be complicit in their needless deaths, LAAS would have been forced years ago to create and develop programs and protocols which would have saved TENS OF THOUSANDS of animal lives by now. But where there's a buck to be made, it seems that someone will be there to grab it - and commit unthinkable evil to do so. It's now up to those with the volition to see beyond money and power to be the voice of compassion for the animals inside LAAS. And with No Kill Advocacy's "NO KILL EQUATION" the path to no kill is a NO BRAINER! All the programs, policies and protocols proven to stop the killing are now written, available and PROVEN thanks to No Kill Advocacy Center.

Here in the city of LA, starting from before Kenneth Hahn (who voted, by the way, for animals in the shelters to be sent to vivisection labs) - along with his son, ex-Mayor James Hahn, who appointed fools to be General Manager of LAAS - it seems every politician not only refuses to do the moral and just thing for the animals of our city, but laughs in the faces of those in the humane community who try going through the normal channels to stop the killing inside LAAS.

Jump to 2005 when Angelinos elected a sleazy, used car salesman type to be Mayor - one who uses his white teeth and broad smile to "broadside" the humane community - and you have our current sad situation. Then add to this debacle one Ed Boks - the proselytizing, lying ex-minister and dog-snatcher appointed by the Mayor to be the head of the LA shelter system. Further, consider the fact that this same Ed Boks - current GM of LAAS - was asked to leave two previous jobs as shelter system director because he was so inept. And don't forget that before Villaraigosa and Blackman appointed Boks, they had a genuine and effective alternative that they could have chosen to put LA on the road to No Kill, but hired Ed Boks instead!

DEMO WRAP: With ALL this in mind, protesters headed out Sunday afternoon to participate in two pickets to try to influence the Mayor to do what's best for the animals and what's necessary to get LA on the road to No Kill. Some months ago, one lone activist had leafleted the neighborhood of Corina Villaraigosa's parents hoping that since Corina, herself, refused to ask the Mayor to stop the killing (she had other things on her mind like the fact that hubby couldn't manage to keep his pants zipped), maybe her parents would ask their son-in-law to do so. Unfortunately, the lone leafleter realized that they simply didn't care about the animals inside LAAS.

So, about twenty activists decided that they would try to educate the neighbors and Villaraigosa's current in-laws about the intense suffering and death going on inside LAAS under the dual reign of Antonio Villaraigosa and Ed Boks. As an activist placed a leaflet on the in-laws' car, a woman came out of the house looking strikingly like Corina Raigosa. When asked if she was Corina and if she would be willing to brainstorm about ways to get the Mayor to stop the killing, she denied that she was Corina, said that activists had the wrong address, and avowed that Villaraigos'a in-laws did NOT live there. Liar, liar pants on fire! The neighbors began to pour out of their homes, and all confirmed that Villaraigosa's in-laws did, indeed, live there and were home! Activists did the best they could to ask the in-laws to call their son-in-law and get him to save the animals before moving on to see if Villaraigosa's sister would be more amenable to activists' pleas!

Next up was Deborah Jean Villar, Antonio's sister. Activists leafleted her very upscale neighborhood with information explaining the facts and asking people to get involved in trying to stop the needless slaughter. The most disappointing aspect was that Deborah Jean refused to talk to the picketers, But there is still hope that others in the neighborhood will read the material left at their doorsteps and do something pro-active for the animals. And companion animal activists certainly won't back down or move on to their next campaign until Villaraigosa and Blackman decide to do what is just for the animals of LA City.

Remember, don't blame the sleazy politicians for doing terrible things if you aren't out there consistently reminding them that they work for US - that WE pay their salaries and are holding them accountable. And if they refuse to listen, go to others who may help them listen. Don't give up - the animals are worth this most noble fight.
