LOS ANGELES - On Saturday morning, June 30, 2007, the San Francisco-based group In Defense of Animals (IDA) held a seminar in conjunction with LAAS. Under the auspices of Ed Boks - forced out of both New York City and Maricopa County, Arizona - his corruption, lying, and falsification of data are legendary. Yet City officials will do nothing either to force him to do his job or to hire someone else competent who will. Meanwhile - as always - the innocent animals pay the price.
Ed Boks seems to be omnipresent these days - showing up at every animal event and speaking about what a great guy he is who is performing miracles to save animals' lives. On Saturday he spent most of his time at the podium preaching to the already converted regarding State Bill 1634. In order to distract the public from focusing on his incompetence, lack of skills and failure to implement any successful programs, protocols and polices to save the animals in Los Angeles, he simply restated the same things the previous speaker had said regarding SB 1634. It appeared that Boks was attempting to talk about ANYTHING other than the issues surrounding his mismanagement at LAAS.
In reality, he's cooking the books, still needlessly executing animals and allowing animals to become ill and die in the shelters. Even with all his fudging and prevarications he has managed to get the kill rate down only one percent in the year and a half he's been there. What was especially ironic on Saturday, was the fact that at the very moment he was speaking and the seminar was taking place, there was a Pet Pride Adoption event in back of the auditorium literally 50 feet from the seminar; and can you guess which organization did NOT have booth there to adopt out animals? You guessed it. . .LAAS! When activists went to look at the adoption event, Best Friends was there with animals as were other private rescues; but LAAS was NO WHERE TO BE SEEN!
It's virtually impossible to understand why Boks just doesn't do his job and consult with No Kill experts. Instead, he has to constantly lie, manipulate the statistics, transfer animals between shelters, and perform all sort of other shenanigans in order to hide how many animals he's killing. With politicians like Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at his side who don't give a damn, Boks has it made. . . or DOES he?
It appeared to those handing out "The Truth About Ed Boks" leaflets to the attendees, that Boks' attempts to hoodwink the public into believing that he is turning Los Angeles into No Kill, is becoming obvious to just about everyone but the Mayor's office! Boks is a con man - a smooth-talking demagogue who can convince some people that 2 + 2 = 5 and the Earth is flat! But this con man has finally been exposed.
In the middle of Boks' sermon, a small band of independent activists from Puppies Without Borders, participated in a loud but informative protest in order to let the audience know who and what Boks really is - and to remind him that not only don't they buy his faulty "math" and "geography," but they will never back down or give up the fight. Their message is getting out louder and louder- and Boks is scrabbling to salvage himself as his systematic slaughter of tens of thousands of lost and homeless companion animals and wildlife is being continuously exposed by activists and those in the humane community who will not surrender until the proven No Kill Equation is implemented in Los Angeles.
