Let us make this perfectly clear:
ADL-LA seeks no personal "profit" from our campaign. We want nothing more than to STOP THE KILLING--and thereby save the lives of thousands of defenseless sentient beings who have the right to feel the sun on their backs and the wind in their faces. Our members and campaigners aren't looking to be hired by the department or keep our high paying "jobs" working for the Mayor, or getting to date Bickhart in order to "have his ear." Nothing personal, but no member of ADL-LA would be interested in dating Mr. Bickhart. All we want to do is STOP THE KILLING--and that is why we do what we do. We do it for the animals--not for ourselves or anyone else. The animals are our constituents--and our only goal is to save them from abuse, neglect, torture and death.
Mayoral staffer, Jim Bickhart - one of Mayor Villa La Grossa's less intellectually endowed sidekicks - is desperately trying to cover up for Boks. It seems that Jim Bickhart was one of the imbeciles who told the Mayor to hire Ed Boks, even though Bickhart did not bother to check Boks' history. Nor did he encourage any input from the humane community or leaders in the No Kill movement. In fact, both Bickhart and Boks are lying to the humane community about the fact that Ed Boks -who wanted to stay in NYC - was "let go" (aka fired) by the entire Commission there-not ONE voted for him to stay! They did NOT want Boks to continue as Executive Director of New York City Animal Care and Control, just as the Maricopa shelter system did not want him to continue there either.
We now know that it was Jim Bickhart himself who leaked a private document to an anonymous female blogger -(who Jim Bickhart was dating at the time) and got her to put out false information to the public regarding the firing of Erika Brunson, an LADAS Commissioner in '05. Let us be very clear on this: Erika Brunson was far and away the best and most assertive, courageous, and outspoken advocate for animals. Yet, she was chosen by Jim Bickhart to be the "sacrificial lamb" for Mayor "Villa La Grossa." Jim Bickhart chose the best Commissioner to let go, because she didn't buy his shtick or spend hours schmoozing with him on the phone. Bickhart recently leaked this private document to his then sweetheart blogger in order to try and cover up the fact that it was he who was solely responsible for Brunson being removed from the LAAS Commission, and the animals losing their most courageous advocate.
Now, we are left with a bunch of milquetoast Commissioners who don't have the courage to stand up for much of anything and who continue to do the same old, same old that the dozens of previous LAAS Commissioners have done. Brunson was not only a breath of fresh air on a Commission that must be bored even with itself, but also a mover and shaker for the animals - having put her money where her mouth is and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for spay/neuter and made it possible for the city to get it's very first spay/neuter mobile.
So, while the Commissioners continue to talk ad nauseum about everything BUT the implementation of concrete solutions to the killing going on inside LAAS, most people in the humane community no longer want to waste their time going to these embarrassing commission meetings. The animals are now left with a weak commission and a fraudulent General Manager Ed Boks and his accomplice Jim Bickhart.
Jim Bickhart had ample opportunity to work with the humane community - and even No Kill Solutions (see ww.NoKillSolutions.com) in order to engage in a local and nation wide search for a truly competent, honest, sincere and dedicated General Manager who would turn our City Death Camps around. Instead, Villa La Grossa appointed someone, with Bickhart's blessing for all the WRONG reasons and without even doing a proper background check!! And now, just as before - because of our Mayor's and his side kick Jim Bickhart's greed and arrogance - animals are continuing to be slaughtered, imprisoned, and treated like garbage in a supposedly progressive city.
Ever since Bickhart was appointed to be the liaison to the humane community--liaison meaning that he tries to keep the humane community quiet by hiding what's going on inside the Department--a couple commissioners have been duped into thinking that he would help them do the right thing for the animals. But, it is widely known that if you are not either dating or sleeping with Mr. Bickhart, your chances are slim to none to be included in his circle of "confidants" and that the animals are not his highest priority!
Even the current LADAS commissioners and some others, have bought into the lies Bickhart has told them and basically nothing concrete or truly effective has resulted for the thousands of animals who are systematically killed in terror inside the six city Death Camps. Let's face it - the LAAS Commissioners have not set any NO KILL or other progressive policies or protocols which would indeed stop the needless killing of THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of healthy and treatable cats, dogs, puppies, kittens, bunnies, and wildlife.
The one Commissioner (Erika Brunson) who was actually making changes was fired by none other than Jim Bickhart!
Ex-LAAS Commissioner Erika Brunson got more results in lives saved as a private citizen before even being appointed to the Commission, then the entire five-member Commission has done as a group of Mayoral-appointed individuals! And that is patently unacceptable. Shame on Brunson's fellow Commissioners for not standing up and saying to the Mayor and to Jim Bickhart that of all the Commissioners to be asked to step down or be fired, it should NOT have been Brunson.
